Downsizing from Home to Retirement

We are move management and transition experts.

Making the decision to move to a retirement community can be a difficult and emotional journey. Every move is a challenge, but we know that with advanced age, leaving your home and neighbourhood while making hard downsizing choices is stressful and can affect the health of some seniors.

We start with a free onsite consultation to meet with the family, discuss the move, and review all the details. When we get to see how you are currently living and using your home, it helps us to re-create that same feel in your new residence. You get to meet us and decide if you are comfortable. Most importantly, this allows us to create a detailed scope of work and estimate for your review.

We are experienced in helping in all the areas of your move:

  • Space Planning: When we visit your home, we can discuss what furniture you would like to move. We will measure your pieces and work with the floor plan of your new home to ensure that we maximize the space. We will also make suggestions about re-imaging how you used some of your favourites, in order to ensure your new home ‘feels’ like your old one.

  • Pre-Move Preparation: If required, we can aid in decluttering, sorting and packing items to be moved in the weeks and days leading up to the move.

  • The day before the move- We will be onsite for any remaining packing and ensure that all items are labeled and we have a clear understanding of the furniture that needs to be disassembled.

  • Coordination with the Retirement Home: If the new resident requires elevator access, we will communicate and coordinate with the Building Manager. We will ensure not only confirmed timing for access or any logistics or Building requirements.

  • On the Day of the Move: We’ll be present to support the moving company, ensuring everything is safely transported and unpacked in the new space. We’ll hang pictures, set up furniture, and remove all boxes and garbage.

  • Family Involvement: The only thing we need from the family is to take their loved one out for the day—leave the rest to us!

  • Completion Update: We’ll keep you informed throughout the move, and once everything is set up, we’ll notify you that the process is complete.

When you bring your loved one to their new home, everything will be ready and waiting for them. At Tartan Spaces, we understand the emotions that come with this change, and we’re dedicated to making the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Less Stress

Experts agree that moving is one of the most stressful life events and recent poll shows that the majority of people feel moving is even worse than divorce or a death in the family.*

According to a survey from moving company Duck Brand, it takes 182 days for the average person to unpack every box, and some boxes never get unpacked at all. If you can live that long without something, you probably don't need it. (just saying)
